Dr Luciana Esteves, BSc, MSc, PhD
Jon is a distinguished coastal scientist and numerical modeller with 36 years of experience delivering expert insights to large, multidisciplinary teams. He has authored over 75 peer-reviewed publications in leading international journals, contributing significantly to the fields of coastal dynamics and sediment transport. His career spans several high-impact roles: Research Scientist at NERC (1986–2006), where he advanced foundational work in coastal processes. Professor of Sediment Dynamics at the University of Plymouth (2006–2010), mentoring researchers and leading academic initiatives. Head of Modelling at ABPmer (2010–2014), overseeing complex modelling projects for coastal and marine environments. Technical Director at Mott MacDonald (2014–2024), guiding strategic technical input across major infrastructure and environmental programs.. Jon has overseas experience gained in Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Brazil, India, Ghana, Vietnam and the USA. Following his retirement in 2024, Jon continues to contribute as an external consultant for Mott MacDonald. His expertise encompasses: Coastal processes, morphodynamics, flooding and shoreline evolution, sediment transport and numerical modelling, data analysis and interpretation, fieldwork and large-scale laboratory experimentation.
Lu has over three decades of international experience in coastal and environmental research. Her impressive academic journey spans institutions in the UK and Brazil, including roles at the University of Plymouth, London Metropolitan University, and Fundação Universidade Federal do Rio Grande (FURG). She holds an MSc from Florida Atlantic University and a PhD focused on coastal dynamics and management. Lu’s research explores the impacts of climate change on coastal systems, with a focus on shoreline change, managed realignment, and relocation from high-risk areas. She is particularly interested in sustainable strategies to reduce risks and vulnerabilities in coastal communities. Lu has led and collaborated on projects across the UK, Latin America, Africa, and Europe, supported by funders including AHRC, GCRF, CAPES, the Newton Fund, and NERC. She brings a holistic, interdisciplinary approach to coastal management, integrating physical, ecological, and social dimensions. Her expertise includes GIS, sediment transport modelling, participatory ecosystem service mapping, and a wide range of field techniques. Fluent in English, Portuguese, and Spanish, she is committed to inclusive, cross-cultural research and communication.
